1.) Great little instant read thermometer

I have this thermometer in black and it's been great.

Important tip to note: Stick the metal tip into item, let it sit for a couple of seconds and then turn on the thermometer. Do this and you'll get the instant read feature. If you turn it on first, the thermometer will show the temperature of the air, then you stick it into the item and the display will slowly move to the temperature of the item. This takes a bit of time. So be sure you stick it into your item FIRST, let the metal acclimate to the temperature of the item, and then turn it on. Then you'll get the instant read each time.

I've washed this, I've dropped it, and it's still going strong. It's not a replacement for an oven thermometer or a probe thermometer, but it's great at what it's designed for - a quick and easy instant read thermometer.

Since there's no picture, here's a little useful information:

Unlike most of the kitchen thermometers, this one is laid out with the display on the side rather than the top, more like a fever thermometer. For making tea this is a little inconvenient, but it'll be nice for grill use since I usually stick the thermometer into burgers from the side.

Also, the cap which covers the probe conveniently snaps (securely) onto the other end of the case to extend the thermometer a few inches so you don't burn your fingers. Nice touch!

Otherwise, it is as advertised and works quite well. I'm ordering another, in fact.

The head chef at my cooking school had this one. Handy to have it always with you, to wear around your neck when making a big meal. Instantly it accelerates to the current temperature. It does have a long life battery, but remember to turn it off.

This is a great thermometer. We've used it for several weeks now and are pleased. Its not INSTANT, but it'll give you a read in maybe 4 or 5 seconds. Another reviewer suggested inserting before turning on to get a quicker read. I love this gadget. We used to only use that big bar-b-que, double-pronged digital thermometer which was just too big for the kitchen.

This is a perfect size, works well, and doesn't seem like it'll damage easy during washing.

It is fast and appears to be very accurate (it measured Ice at 0C). It is ruggedly constructed and I can wear it around my neck with out it falling out of the probe cover. I feel it was a very good deal!!!!!!

I work as a restaurant manager and love this thermometer. I mainly love it as I wear it around my neck so as to not loose it (which I tend to do with most things). I have never had any problems with it. It has become part of my uniform.

This is the 3rd instant read thermometer we've tried. It's the only one that's lasted more than a couple of uses. I didn't submerge them, just rinsing was enough to destroy them. This one registers the temperature quickly and the hold button is really handy so it doesn't need to take the temperature up from ambient for a 2nd check of meat temperature on the grill. I can wash it [it can get wet without dying].

A great piece of equipment.

I've had one for years and use it constantly. I cook a lot and also brew beer at home, which requires frequent, accurate temperature readings. I've often mistakenly submerged this thermometer and it just keeps on ticking.

This product has so many great features. After reading reviews on other thermometers, I realized that it needed to be waterproof, and this on is. I have used it on roasts cooked in the oven, and it works quickly (although not instantly) and accurately. I'm looking forward to using it on the grill too. Because the cover can be attached to extend the length, I hope it will work well for that also. If so, I will rerate it with 5 stars.

I bought this thermometer for my son's science project. For the price, it was well worth it. It was used to get the temperature of soda and did exactly what we needed it to do. The numbers are easy to read and it doesn't take long to get a reading. I'm sure we will find other uses for the thermometer as well. Nice case and easy to take care of.

I've never used a digital thermometer for food before so I have nothing else to compare this to. It works well so far and we have no complaints. Pretty simple and straightforward to use.

15.) Decent, but not waterproof

I have had it for over a year.
A bit slow to get the final temperature --can take 30 secs to read 220 degrees.
Not suitable for candy/jelly making because steam gets inside.

Construction is lightweight. After it started failing, I tried to remove the battery. Trying to remove the flimsy battery cover broke it. No markings for neg/pos position of battery. Battery contacts had corroded slightly.

Ok to use for checking food temperature, meat etc in a non-steamy environment. Expect it to last 1-2 years with light to moderate use then throw it away.

Thermometer is good value for money, but takes a long time to get a reading. 7-9 seconds. On a very thick pork roast it was off by 20 degrees compared to my more expensive $100 Thermometer. On thinner cuts- steak it was very comparable, just slow.

17.) Not very waterproof

I know this is supposed to be a waterproof thermometer, but my wife ran it under the faucet to clean it and the screen fogged up inside. I took out the battery and found water in the compartment.

I give it as many as two stars because until the water got in, it did work as advertised. And seeing that other people have had no problem with the waterproofing, I'm wondering if I just had a bad o-ring.

Now, I'm off to find a better thermometer.

I used this 3 times to check the water temperature at Walden pond and the third time it failed. It was obvious that water had gotten into the casing and caused the failure.

19.) Too slow for larger cuts of meat

Even when you place the probe before turning the unit on, it takes 5-7 seconds to get a read. This greatly reduces accuracy when checking the internal temp of large cuts of meat and predisposes to over cooking. Accuracy in liquids or anything with a uniform temperature however is excellent.

20.) Broke pretty quickly

Started glitching up after about 10 uses. It works sometimes, but sometimes randomly turns off or randomly resets the temperature readout. I've been careful not to submerse it in water, so not sure what happened.
Also, as others said, it is pretty slow to stabilize at a temperature reading - takes 20 to 30 seconds before it stabilizes at a readout within +/- 1 degree F of the actual temperature.

i am very sad to say that i was un happy i use a thermometer every day to to help me do my job you would think you order some thing new it's going to work not in this case i am working in IRAQ not like i can take it back to the store i would have to lose more money send it back to you i am A chef a lot of my staff want we to order them one after i show them mine in i add it dont work i would not have them to pay all that money for noting i order a lot from AMAZON i will re think that THE order be fore that i order CD and got what you wanted me to have NOT WHAT I ORDER i will now keep give you money in not get what i want BUT YOU GET MY MONEY AND THAN GIVE ME A HARD TIME

I bought this product in October 2007 and the screen stopped working in January 2008. The company gladly replaced the product in February 2008 with an identical model and the replacement died with the same exact issue in November 2008. When it worked, it was great. It doesn't seem to last very long.

23.) Pretty worthless item

I bought this item based on a friend's recommendation. When I got mine, I was excited to use it. It was a little while, since I really got this for my smoker and live in the north. It turns on sometimes, but when you insert it in the meat, it turns off. Now my return priviledge has expired, so I am out of luck. I would not recommend or buy this unit again!

25.) Doesn't last, and doesn't work well while it does

This product died on me just this morning, in another candy-making task, after only 18 months of active life.

Seemed like the greatest deal at the time of purchase because of its wide range of temperature monitoring for the price. Then, as a couple other reviews point out, you oopsy-drop it or accidentally stick it in the pot of boiling cream too far, and the illusion of being waterproof is completely debunked.

When this happened to me, I chose to pull it apart to clean the innards and see if it was salvageable. I was very proud of myself for having removed all the gunk and gotten it to working order again. Then, once I reassembled it, it came to my attention that the construction is so shoddy, even pulling it apart once to clean it strained the bad connection design too much. For months I was operating with plumbers tape wrapped around it, and even that didn't really fix the issue, I was still left trying my hardest to hold the battery door firm against the body of the unit, while also trying not to get steam burns (unsuccessful, fwiw).

To boot, the METAL pocket-clip will jump out and bite from the hot pan, it won't really hold the edge of a pan if you want it to unless you bend it, and then there is no bending it back. The hold button is the largest button, but least often used, ...do I really need to continue? I will: I'll tell you of its death. As I was making spun sugar this morning, the LCD screen stuttered on and off (again), then the screen slowly began to look roasted, then burned. And although it powers on, it just registers all of its initializing 8s, no useful info.

This is a sink hole for your hard-earned money. DO NOT BUY. And Taylor? Call me to discuss redesigning this staple kitchen tool I feel so passionately about! For the moment, I recommend Splash-Proof Super-Fast Thermapen (Red) Instant Read Thermometer, Perfect for Barbecue, Home and Professional Cooking instead.

Last a few months then started having trouble with the screen. The read out would fade out. Replaced batteries. Didn't fix the issue. Then started reporting the wrong temperature. It would shoot up to a couple hundred degrees. Not buying again. Threw it away and got a better one.

Shortly after purchasing this, I washed it by hand, expecting it to be waterproof, as claimed. It isn't. Like another reviewer, I found that it fogged up the temperature window. Also, as a culinary student, I wanted to clip it in the sleeve pocket of my chef jacket. Because of the thermometer length, the clip doesn't "catch" on the pocket. This is annoying and leads to the thermometer falling out of the pocket. I'm unimpressed.

I had the same experience as the guy before: water got in, the screen fogged, more water got in, and it stopped showing anything on the screen. So, no matter how accurate this thing is or isn't, I'd have no idea, because I can't see the freakin' temperature any more. This is my second--and last--Taylor that doesn't work as advertised.
