1.) 7th Review, 7th 5 star rating!! Great Scale

There may only be seven reviews for this scale, but there's a reason that all seven of us have rated this product with 5 stars; it is a marvelous machine. You get 5 numbers: weight, body fat, muscle mass, water percentage and bone mineral mass. There is an athletic setting and a regular setting. When I checked body fat (the most examined number) in both athletic and regular mode, the range of fat seemed consistent with a range for my height, weight and build. Obviously, each user will choose the setting that seems most accurate to them (athletic or normal).
The only issue that I have with the scale is in the length of time that information is displayed. Weight is flashed three times and then is solid for about 5 seconds before the scale turns itself off. As well, the body percentages cycle three times before they turn off. I would prefer for the numbers to show as long as you are on the scale. I think that the manufacturers designed it that way to preserve battery life.
Nevertheless, if you do repeated tests within the same time span, you get consistent results (no variations). So, the consistency alone is the main reason for getting this scale. I highly recommend this product. Even if you just use it for the scale it's worth it.

I've been using this scale (Taylor 5599) for about 4 months and, so far, had no problems. I bought it new and the readings for weight and body fat seem to be about right. I would buy it again with no hesitation from my experience over the last few months. The scale was set up for myself and another user with ease. The manual is adequate but a little more information would be nice especially on the bone mass readings and their accuracy/usefulness particularly in (us) seniors. Cj

I recently started on the HCG protocol for weight loss. It requires that you weigh yourself everyday and needs accuracy so if something worked or didn't work the day before, you can adjust it the following day.
I've have stepped on it 7 times in a row and only had one variation of .2lbs. I think you can trick it if you don't stand in the same spot every time (more towards the middle, more out to the side) and I can't guarantee by bathroom floor is perfectly level, so there you go.
It's a wonderful product. No complaints. I love that it measures body fat, body water, bone mass and muscle mass. It's really important to make sure you aren't eating your muscles when losing weight.
Highly recommended.
4.) Great for BMI readings for muscley individuals and as a regular scale too!
Reviewed by: Jean-Marie Beautiful Cali, USA
Rating:
I've had this scale for a couple of months and love using it to calculate my true BMI. I've also read that the method it uses for calculating is highly accurate (second to a $400 procedure involving an MRI type machine). Because I've lifted weights for many years of my life, I understand I'm going to be heavier due to the dense muscle, and the BMI output provides me with an accurate reading over the typical BMI calculation which simply uses height and weight. I've watched my BMI and weight go down in concert with one another and it is truly encouraging!
I also have a Wii Fit and it uses the simple calculation to figure out my BMI. This would be truly disconcerting if I trusted the Wii Fit's figure because I understand that muscle weighs a lot more than fat. The Wii Fit shows my BMI at over 29% and says "that's overweight" plumping my poor Mii into a larger body frame, all while she twists about looking at her larger proportions. I only shake my head because I know my REAL scale shows it at less than 23%.
You can also save the settings for up to four people so useful for a family, although the manual states it is not accurate for individuals under 10 years old.
If you want your true BMI reading and a great looking scale, this is the one for you!
**Update July 8, 2010
For quite some time, I've been dealing with the occasional "Err" message when I've gone to weigh myself. And now, I can't get on the scale without it saying "Lo". Sometimes, it will flash my weight for a second before it reads "Lo" - and sometimes, the scale will show that I've lost 3 or 4 pounds out of nowhere and I start to panic that I'm dropping weight way too fast. Then it will correct itself and its back to normal weight again.
I've been EXTREMELY frustrated with these messages and think that maybe "lo" means low batteries so now I'm on the hunt to replace them. I haven't reduced the star rating because its possible the batteries simply need to be replaced. We'll see!
5.) Works great, easy to read display
Reviewed by: Jason P. Taylor Arizona
Rating:
I have had this scale for a few weeks now & really like it. The display is easy to read and the results are consistent. They seem accurate compared to other scales I use too. I wish it would display the BMI type results a little slower, it hops through the Bone Mass, Muscle Mass, Body Fat & Water Percentages somewhat quickly. It does continue to cycle through a few times, even when you get off the scale though.
To comment on some other reviews, I also had some inaccurate BMI type readings, however the directions mention it works best with damp feet. Hopping on w/ damp feet really makes a difference and provides the results that match others I have used.

We have been using our scale for about a month now and are very satisfied with the acuracy and the ease of setting up the programming. Like any other body fat scale it's only accurate if you take the reading first thing in the morning and use the readings over a long period of time, because it can be off by as much as a couple of points on certain days when you're dehydrated or for what ever reason can't get an accurate reading.

it read ERR I dampen my feet with a wet cloth, and then I got a reading.
I have had it for a few days, and I have to say overall I am impressed.

The scale is pretty accurate. I compared it with my salter 0.1 lbs accurate scale and their weight reading matched exactly. I always get consistent results for the other numbers every time I stand on it and the numbers seem to be correct.
On the down side:
1. The readings for the body fat, water and muscles are displayed right after each other 3 times. Each number is displayed for a second or so before the next number shows up. And they are not in order (top to bottom on the scale). It is kind of hard to catch all of them!
2. The scale also has a big foot print and the plastic seems like it won't look good after sometime.
3. I wish the manual included some guidelines on how to interpret the results.
Overall I am happy with my purchase. The downsides are minor so I am still giving it 5 stars considering its price.

It has been pretty accurate so far (put 2 50lb free weight dumbells on it and it hit 100 lbs). The tempered glass is nice to look at as well vs several scales that are plastic. The only cons are that sometimes you step on and it overloads (all the display items come on) so you have to step off and try again. I was concerned that this scale would not deliver the information reliably based on some of the other reviews. I found those reviews to be wrong. Perhaps those that are getting inconsistant numbers don't have them on a solid surface like vinyl or tile. Carpet provides too much variable cusion to be reliable. I did find that BF, H2O, MM, and BD numbers read the best when I made sure my feet were still wet from the shower and not just moist from the absorbtion of the bath mat.
I was concerned that my wife would not like the contemporary look of the stainless and glass, but she really likes that fact that it looks more like an accessory than the traditional cluncky old bathroom scale we are so used to seeing. For normal weighing, the scale is silent, fast, and accurate. The numbers are large and easy-to-read. You need a pad and pen handy to use the additional features because they flash through quickly! I really like this scale. It works well, is simple enough to operate, and looks good sitting in the bathroom. I have a habit of weighing myself each morning and tracking my weight online, so this scale gets used once a day. I've found though that the battery runs out after only about 2 months of use - and it takes those expensive "watch batteries" that cost $4+ each. The batteries alone make this scale a lot more expensive than it appears. I don't know why the manufacturer couldn't have just made the thing operate on an AA or AAA battery, it would have been so much less expensive to operate and gone a lot longer on one battery versus the tiny watch batteries. If you buy this scale, consider the ongoing battery cost in addition to the up front scale cost. At $2/mo this scale will cost you an extra $25 in the first year.

The scale was easy to set up with profiles for all the users (height, age, and whether you are an "athlete") and looks and feels great. Never easy to determine accuracy, but based on the 3 or 4 scales I check regularly this seems to be reading very close to those.
Tested it out and was surprised that I came out at 27% BF. Most of the methods I have access to have variable accuracy as well (pinch test, BMI, etc.) but this is higher than any other reading I have seen. Even if the results are skewed in one direction, the scale is consistant and you can track your progress over time, just don't put too much faith in the reading it gives you.

As with other reviewers, I had to read the instructions a few times. Once I programmed my body info into it, I had no problems. It's a nice-looking scale (albeit with a flimsy plastic handle at the bottom). It appears to give consistent readings, although I have no way to verify if the bone mass, or muscle/water/fat readings are actually accurate.
If all you want is body weight, just step on the scale. However, If you want the bone mass, water content, fat % or muscle %, then you press the "set" button and allow it to enter the correct mode, then step on with moistened feet. There are metal sensors that apparently send impulses through you feet. (You can't feel anything at all.)
My only gripe is the display flashes each reading way too fast, (2 seconds for each of the 5 cycles) and the bone/fat/water/muscle indicator is VERY small. I have average eyesight, but to see a 12 font from 6 feet away, I have to run the sequence 2 or 3 times just to read each function. This is irritating. I assume the small icons and quick sequences are designed to preserve the lithium watch battery; but repeating the function 2-3 times ends up wasting battery power.

This worked great when it was new - it gave consistent readings for weight and body fat, and I used it on a hardwood floor. Several months into use, it started to give ERR readings when I stepped on it. This lasted for a little while, and then it went back to 'normal' performance. A few months later, it wouldn't turn on when I pressed the buttons. I'd have to press them several times or hold them before the scale powered on. Sometimes the wait time between turning on and when it was ready for stepping on was very long. Mostly, it was just inconsistent.
Also, it has a nice sleek look, but the four little plastic raised arms on the top pop off easily if you, for instance, tap it wrong when stepping on or when you're cleaning the glass.
Overall, this product seems to work great for the first 6 months of use, and then it becomes incredibly inconsistent. I've had mine for about 2 years, and it's dead now - won't turn on at all. I would choose a different product if I knew it would last longer.

On the box/picture, this is a nice-looking scale with great features. Out of the box, it has a lot of cheap plastic in key places and the design of the digital interface is lacking. I tried it for a week and returned it. First, the plastic sticks out in a curve around the bottom of the scale, and you quickly realize somebody is eventually going to step there accidentally and break it. The buttons at the top are the same plastic and the whole top flexes down considerably when you press a button (and you have to press fairly hard for the buttons to engage). That leads to the digital interface where the buttons almost always seemed to need two presses before they would function, occasionally it'd work on the first press, but it was nearly always two. To the right of the LCD is a list of parameters (body fat, body muscle, body water and bone mass) that it cycles through after it takes a reading, but for some unknown reason, it doesn't cycle through them in the order printed on the plastic (which makes them more difficult to remember since it goes through them quickly and doesn't save them with the individual's profile).
I initially tried it on a carpet, and the readings were clearly off (my analog scale works fine on the carpet). I moved it to a solid floor. Once moved, it seemed very accurate, and I got consistent readings from it. The included manual was useless. It offers little/no description of the body parameters returned by the scale (and their website doesn't either). Also the setup instructions are not particularly good, there's a tiny icon on the LCD to differentiate male/female which isn't even mentioned in the manual (I assume I correctly guessed the one with the triangle was female, as the male one made no sense). The manual didn't show any pictures of the setup screens, and relied mostly on how many times to press the buttons (not particularly useful when you have to press more than once to get it to register).
I expected more from a $40 scale that is made to look nice on the package. Taylor, minimally, needs to hide the plastic at the bottom under the glass, strengthen the backing behind the buttons, fix their software to show items in the order presented, and drastically improve their manual. All in all, it's a pretty good scale if you just care about the numbers and not how it's built/works.

I bought the Taylor 5599 scale at local Target retail. It seemed like a decent scale for the 1st month, until it suddenly started displaying Err1 whenever I stepped on it. My previous Counselor brand scale worked perfectly for 20 years. The Taylor 5599 manual says Err1 indicates over 440lbs is on the scale. I can assure you I weigh far less than 1/2 that. From other reviews, it seems I'm not the only one to get the Err1 error. I tried removing the batteries to reset the electronics, with no luck. The scale has a lifetime warranty, so I called Taylor's customer service number (866-843-3905) and spoke to someone. There was no easy resolution to the Err1 error - perhaps a spring broke was the diagnosis. They would replace the scale if I'd send it to New Mexico...at my expense, of course. I might get a new one after 3-4 weeks (they blamed this delay on a backlog, and UPS - who can deliver overnight if you pay for it). They would not cross-ship me a new unit while the defective unit was in transit. The manual says NOT to return it to the retailer, presumably so the retailer doesn't know of the defective units they're selling. Despite this, I took the scale back to Target who readily exchanged my defective unit for a new one, without the original packaging or receipt. I've just validated the new scale works. My hope is the quality of the new unit is better than the last, but only time will tell. In the end, the scale looks nice and my hope is the new unit provides years of accurate weight measurement, but I'm not betting on it.

I'm working out 5 times a week, and bought this scale thinking it would be cool to see the fat %. Not onyl was the percentage way off, but the variance was unacceptable. I found the weight variance to be off as well.
Overall a disappointing purchase. Thank goodness for Amazon's return policy.

I bought this because I like the sleek design and I was excited about the features. You can save the height and age for multiple people but it does not save your weight, BMI, or other statistics. I am disappointed with this purchase for a few of reasons. First, the box the scale came in appeared to be opened and the scale had water marks on it straight out of the box. The packaging was not good. The scale arrived into a very large brown box with crumbled up newspaper print. The box is huge compared to the actual product. When you stand on the scale it doesn't always turn on. Pushing buttons doesn't even turn it on sometimes. I usually have to remove the batteries and replace them in order to get it to work. The last problem with this scale is minor but it does bother me: Every time you step on it, it dips down and makes a noise. It feels unstable and as if it will break- and I weigh about 140.
As for accuracy: The weight seems to be right on target. I honestly haven't really tracked the other features because I've had so many problems with it.
I definitely plan on returning this scale on Monday.

I paid $43 for this scale at Target and was disappointed to find the following:
1. The body fat analyzer was way off. I'm 128 lbs, 5'8", male and the scale told me I am overweight! This is even after following the directions in the manual to use damp feet for better accuracy.
2. The weight readings were inconsistent. I would step on the scale, step off and back on and get a difference in weight of 1 to 2 lbs. My sister also noted it was giving a reading of about 2 lbs more than her gym scale. I finally gave up and returned the scale after discovering that it differed by 2.5 lbs from the one at my doctor's office.
I expected much better quality for the price and was quite disappointed with this product.

I was excited when this finally arrived. It had lots of neat features that I was excited to take advantage of. I took it out of the box and instantly noticed how flimsy and brittle the plastic was. One small drop could easily break it, and render the entire scale useless. The next disappointment was when I turned it on for the first time. I'm not sure if I got a defective unit, but the display half-worked. Parts of some numbers were nice and bright, while others were barely visible, and others didn't show up at all. I would suggest Escali High-Capacity Bathroom Scale with Body Fat/Body Water Monitoring (440lb / 200kg) as an alternative.

This scale appeared to work well the first month I had it. A few months after owning the scale, it started to show me losing weight (my goal was to gain weight, unfortunately) at an alarming rate... eventually, I got fed up with the scale and, using a piece of shelving to distribute the weight evenly, I placed a pair of 60 lb dumbbells (120 lbs total) on the scale to see what it would read. Sure enough, the reading was about 15 lbs too low. Taylor Scale=FAIL
I then scoured the web to see if there was a way to recalibrate or "zero" the scale. I looked over everything I could find on the company's website. I found nothing helpful and tossed the POS.
On a lesser note, I was also a little skeptical of the Athlete vs. Non-athelete bodyfat settings... I think the "athlete" settings were a few percentage points too low, and the non-athlete settings were clearly too high.
I'm an active 150lb 25 year-old male, and I do not approve of this product.

Received scale and it looked great. Also worked great. Unfortunately it was for only 10 days. The scale then reflected weights varying as much as 10 pounds. I mean it was all over the place.
I put in fresh batteries. No change.
I then called Taylor customer service. I got a recording saying they had a heavy customer demand and that my call would be taken in order. I was given the option to leave my phone number. I decided to wait. After 18 minutes I gave up and pressed the keypad number to leave my phone number. I was then transferred to leave my number only to get a recording telling me that the recorder line was full. The phone then disconnected me.
I called Amazon and they are sending me a replacement.
Hope it works better than the orginal. I can understand a product breaking, what I cannot understand is such shabby customer service.

Regardless, I was looking for a reliable way to keep track of weight loss and now I feel like I'm constantly guessing whether I need to subtract 4.6lbs or whatever it decides to read that day, or whether the reading when the scale does happen to come up at 0 is even right. Not what I was hoping for.
In all fairness, I have not tried to return it, so I'm not sure if this one is just defective but I really wasn't hoping for an involved process in getting a scale.

After a year of working 3-4 times a week (mostly weight training, pilates, yoga) - I haven't lost any weight but got noticeably stronger and leaner, my clothes are loose. So I thought I'd treat myself to the home body fat analyzer. Checked the definition for the athlete (10 hrs+ per week of aerobics, 60 resting heart rate - not me) so I selected normal person. My body fat measured at 29.9%, second time at 30.4%! Are you kidding me??? Choosing being an athletic person it measured at body fat at 20.9% which seems to be more likely but definitely not by Taylor's definition of an Athlete.... So either you can kid yourself that you are an athlete and get a reading that feels good or get some kind of crazy reading that doesn't make any sense. Can not believe I wasted my money.
