OXO's newest addition to the kitchen counter is this well-designed, practical food scale. The pull-out display makes sense if you have ever used a scale and cannot see the readout with a large container on top. As cool as the design is, the scale is extremely accurate, so much that we use it for a postage scale at home, and it weighs anything from an envelope of under one ounce, to a good sized package for the mail (up to 11 pounds). Weighing ingredients in food is the European way of measuring while cooking, and so much more accurate than volume measurements. Of course it is bi-lingual so you may measure ounces or grams, and it is perfect for converting European recipes
2.) Worth the Weight

I couldn't agree more with the other reviews thus far. This unit is sleek looking, and the pull out diplay is another ingenious OXO idea. The numbers are large and easy to read. It zeros for weighing multiple items with a simple button push, and the metal surface of the scale can be easily removed for clean up.
I've found this little machine to be quite intuitive, you can set it up with the included batteries and get right to work without so much as a glance at the instructions.

4.) Smart thinking by OXO!
Reviewed by: Razzoo KC,MO

Works as advertised. Measurements are precise.
Smart ideas:
1. Back light can be turned on if you need it. That way you do not run down the battery if the light is not needed. Good feature if there is a glare or you need to see the display from a distance.
2. Obviously, the pull out display. I wasn't sure if this was a needed feature, but once I put a dinner plate on the scale it was well worth it. Display pulls out from scale easy and fits back on scale nice and snug.
3. Zeroing option or tare feature.
4. You can switch between weights with the touch of a button. No turning on and off to reset.
5. Scale will go into a sleep mode after 3 minutes, but retains all measurements. Simply push a button to wake it up and keep working. Auto shut off after 45 minutes.
6. Easy to clean. Scale plate comes off.
7. Can store almost anywhere with the slim build.
The only thing people might find a problem with is cost. It does cost a little more than some other scales, but I would recommend it for the features I listed above that the other scales do not have or do not perform as well. You can always justify not needing a certain feature or paying a little more. But it sure is nice having a scale that works great and does everything you need.
5.) Beautiful and functional

Love it - I use scales quite a bit for weighing my food for portion control, but I always keep the scale in the cabinet becuase they're bulky and don't look very good on the counter. This one is very slim, I love the stainless which matches my kitchen decor, and fits neatly between the microwave and fridge. Big easy to read numbers, light up display, and the face of it pulls out to read when I weigh on a plate. I can zero it out so I can just add an ingredient, zero it, add another ingredient, zero it...you get the picture. I love it, worth every penny.
6.) Worth the money

I was a bit apprehensive to spend this much on a scale, but I have since used the two main features multiple times and so I think it has paid for itself. The pull out display is very useful and the zero function is fantastic. If there is a downside, it would be that the display updates with a very slight lag so as I pour more of an ingredient into a bowl, the measurement isn't instant. So just add more of your ingredient gradually and you'll be fine.

The Scale is great. I searched reviews thoroughly before I purchased this one. And here are the pros I've found:
1. The top comes off for easy cleaning (although it really doesn't get dirty.)
2. The front pulls forward in case you have a big plate or box or whatever on it. You can still read the display.
3. It is small and fits nicely on my counter.
4. It is stainless steel and is good looking as far as scales go.
5. It is accurate.
6. The read out stays on the screen for an ample time.
7. It takes regular size batteries.
I found no negatives. I am really glad I picked this one.

We shopped around a lot, and came to the opinion that you get what you pay for. I would highly recommend this item.

This is my second digital food scale. I loved the first, a Salter 3007, but as another Amazon member warned me I would, I melted it on top of the toaster. It still worked fine, but after the battery need to be replaced, I decided to get a new scale.
Here's why I love the OXO Food Scale:
1. Easy to use. The buttons are simple; no instructions needed to figure stuff out; very intuitive design.
2. Very accurate.
3. Very precise. This things measures single grams. My previous scale measured grams in increments of 5.
4. Pull-Out Display. Very helpful when working with oversized items
5. Uses AAA batteries. No looking for strange batteries

Disregard the 1 star review!!! This is an excellent food scale, providing consistent results time after time. The pull out feature is actually helpful when weighing ingriedents in a larger bowl. Something I never considered before. The zero function is quite helpful also. It is compact, so it's easy to store and use. I used to have a Cusinart scale which was larger and in 2 parts and this is so convenient and easy. I appreciate people who take the time to write a review and usually the reviews are fairly evenly weighted, so I was surprised to see one 1 star review stating that the scale gives erratic results. So I weighed and weighed ( 20+ times in a row) a can of food and each time the weight was the same, even when placing the can on different parts of the scale - center, to the sides. I weighed a letter ( 3/8 oz) about 20 times and each time - 3/8 oz! Perhaps this person got a defective scale or it got damaged in shipping somehow. This is one great scale!!
16.) Solves so many problems!

1. Backlight - I didn't think I would use this but I have several times.
2. Smooth buttons - easy to clean.
3. The weighing plate comes off, so it's easy to clean too.
4. It remembers the weight even when it turns off. I used to compulsively press on the bowl or whatever was on my old scale, to keep the scale active to make sure it didn't turn off. No more!
5. On/Off button. This isn't why I bought it by any means, but it is nice when I'm just weighing one thing really quickly, and I don't have to drain the battery life waiting for it to turn off automatically.
6. Pretty high capacity - some food scales only hold 5 pounds or so. I often use mine to get equal servings out of a big pot of soup, for example. With this scale I can put the whole pot on there, subtract the weight of the pot, and then easily ladle out equal portions.
7. This is the reason I bought this scale, only to discover several other great features. With my old scale, weighing a plate or a big pot was really difficult, because the big size of it covered the display. I had to crouch down and use a flashlight to try to see what the weight was. This feature totally solves that problem.

The pull out display is awesome. You can put large plates on the scale and because of that feature, the display is never covered up. Uncomplicated, small foot print, good display, accurate. What more could you want?
I'm a body builder and I have to weigh out each and every meal that I eat. 6 meals a day. This scale is perfect for that and probably anything else that you might need in the kitchen.
I've seen a few complaints about the increments being in English measurements rather than in Decimals. I agree that in this day and age of computer power, there should be an option to switch between the two. But let's get real folks! How hard is it to convert .5 to 1/2 or .25 to 1/4 or .75 to 3/4???? And when are you ever going to have a recipe that calls for any other increment???
This scale is IMO, perfect!

Can't say enough how much I love this scale. I use it so much I carry it back and forth between my house and our restaurant every day. I should have bought two of them. Two days after I received it - I dropped it (GASP!!) on the floor and the top (stainless steel plate) came off. I almost cried. Put it back together, crossed my fingers, and sure enough - it came back on and still works great. In a disgusting display of not wising up, I have since dropped it one other time - and it is still working fine. I don't recommend you do this, but the fact that this thing is still working is nothing short of a miracle.
I use the pull out display a lot more than I thought I would. It's nice to not have to look for a small bowl or bend over to try to read the display when you have a large plate on the scale.
I love how easy it is to switch between grams and ounces, and how easy it is to zero it out between ingredients. I will never go back to an old school dial scale.
I HIGHLY recommend this item!

I'd been toying with the idea of getting a digital scale for a long time. Some time ago, America's Test Kitchen (PBS) did a product comparison of lots of kitchen digital scales on their show. This is the model they recommended, but I was still reluctant to fork over the $$$.
More and more, however, ATK has been showcasing recipes in which they weighed ingredients, rather than measured them. It pushed me over the edge-- I bought this scale.
I can't say enough about how glad I am that I spent the money. There's nothing like working with the right tools, and that's true for everything in life, not just cooking! The scale has come in handy for a multitude of uses. It has met and exceeded my expectations, which were high to begin with.
It's especially fun to weigh our portions (even on the yummy Baked Ruffles to go alongside a lunchtime sandwich!) and see how much we are eating!

In fact, I love this scale so much that I've bought one for my sister for Christmas. It's not the cheapest food scale on the market, but it's by far (to me) the most useful and user-friendly.

Recently I won a gift certificate to a store where I was able to pick this item up for free. If I hadn't I'm not sure I would have forked over $50 for a food scale. However, the timing was right to pick it up because I was just looking into learning how to make better cakes, cupcakes and other baked goods and had learned the importance of weighing flour versus the use of measuring cups. I am very happy to have the scale and have already made great use of it for making cupcakes and for weighing meat bought in bulk and separated for freezing.
I love that you can zero out the scale as you go along which allows you to put your bowl on it, zero it out, add one dry ingredient, zero out again, add more, etc. I don't have to add measurements together to get an accrued total weight.
The read out is large but not overly large. The buttons are basic and easy to use. The design overall is very slim and makes it easy to store on it's side in my cabinet. Finally, I love that the display pulls out for the times when your bowl is larger than the scale. You can pull the display out and continue zeroing out and adding ingredients as needed and still see exactly where you are at with the weight.
Overall it is a great design and a great product. I have a hard time understanding why a scale would cost $50 but regardless, if you are looking for a GOOD scale this is a great one and really is worth the money.

50.) The Perfect Kitchen Scale
Reviewed by: J. Hodroff

In my opinion, this is the perfect kitchen scale. You get the sense that an actual cook was involved in its design.
First off, and I guess most important, it's dead on accurate and can weigh items up to 11 pounds, in 1/8-ounce and 1-gram increments. Instead of displaying weight in decimal notation, which can be confusing to the average cook, it reads out in fractions. For example, instead of displaying 4.375 ounces, it displays 4-3/8 ounces. Like I said, it seems like an actual cook was involved in the design, rather than a room full of engineers (nothing against engineers, that's how I make a living)! If you prefer kilograms instead of pounds and ounces, it has a button that allows you to switch back and forth.
With large numbers and a bright blue backlight, it's easy to read in all conditions. To make it even easier to read when weighing items that extend over the base, you can detach the display and move it up to 4 inches from the scale. This means you can weigh items up to 16 inches in diameter and still clearly see the display.
It also has a tare weight function, which allows you to place an empty container on the scale and hit the tare button to reset the display to zero. This is very handy when adding ingredients to a bowl. For example, suppose you're making a recipe that calls for a cup of flour and cup of milk. You put your mixing bowl on the scale, press the tare weight button, which resets the display to zero and then add 5 ounces of flour. Press the tare weight button again and add 8 ounces of milk. No measuring cups to clean and no worrying about how tightly you packed the flour in the cup. Once you get used to measuring ingredients by weight, instead of volume, you'll never go back. It's accurate, fast and easy.
After several months of frequent almost daily use, the Oxo scale has performed flawlessly. If something were to happen to it, I'd immediately order a new one.

Clean-up is a cinch. The display pulls out so cleaning it and its surrounds is simple. The platform snaps off for hand washing and drying, then back onto the base.
I do have a wish list for this fine kitchen appliance. I'd like to see half gram precision, though that's not at all critical for kitchen use. Like others, I'd rather have a decimal display for Imperial weights instead of ounce (one-eighth ounce) increments. I'd also prefer a .05 ounce precision. I don't see that being a hard thing to implement, as 1 gram is a finer precision.

For example, I put an empty bowl on the scale and turn the scale on. It registers zero to start with. I measure some cereal into the bowl, then push the zero button. The scale goes back to zero, and I pour however many ounces of milk I want. I could take the bowl off and the scale will measure minus unless I hit the zero button, which helps if for instance I wanted to pour the milk away from the scale and put it back to see how much was added.

After reading Amazon and other website reviews, I picked this scale over the Escali Primo food scale. This one is more expensive, but people did not report having issues with the battery cover or thinking that this product looked cheap - which were things said about the Escali.
So far it works great - I weighed a nickel (specified to weigh 5 kg by the U.S. Mint), and with a small number of trials, somewhere between 80-85% of the trials reported 5 kg (the other times it showed up as 4kg). I feel like given more trials (hundreds of them), the percentage of times it'd show up accurately would be around 95% or more. I'm obviously using it for more than weighing nickels, and it's doing a good job!
It has a wonderful design - and intuitive display that permits tarring (zeroing the scale), a backlight for night use, and a button to toggle between g/kg and oz/lbs. The pull-out display is an awesome feature. Battery cover solid. Includes batteries. Looks nice in my kitchen.
Amazon sent me a scale with the display buttons upside-down - but this was a manufacturer's defect. They were good about the return, and even credited me for the money I had to spend on a packing envelope in which to return the item. I ended up buying the item at Williams Sonoma, which has it for the same price.

I selected this kitchen scale based on its size, large display area, lb/kg conversion, and expected accuracy based on reviews by others. Although overall I'm satisfied, a couple of small things caused some disappointment:
- The enclosed batteries were no good (why bother enclosing them if battery life is not guaranteed? It's more frustrating to have dead batteries than not having batteries at all)
- The scale is not as accurate as expected, and the weight measurement actually changes on the same items from one measure to the next. I have a set of old brass weights that I put on the scale to test the scale's accuracy. The first time I put a 100g weight on it, it measured it accurately as 100g. Then two minutes later I put the same weight back on the scale and it showed only 99g. It did the same with all the weights I have from 20g to 250g, showing the accurate weight the first time, then 1g less the second time. I can't figure out what that's about.
- I erroneously assumed that the scale can be stored on its side, rather than laying flat. Wrong. It must be stored laying flat, which was disappointing. It's true that in the product description there was no indication one way or another about storage restrictions, so my fault for hoping that it can be stored upright, but it would have been nice to know for a fact about storage restrictions.
I'm not dissatisfied with this scale, but I will look around for other options when I need to replace it.

This is a great scale. I was looking for a small digital scale that was easy to use and accurate. I send packages for my small business and needed accurate weights for USPS and determining online shipping costs. Additionally, I am a homebrewer and needed an accurate and easy to use scale for measuring ingedients. This fits the bill in both cases. The Tare function or "zero" button is great for allowing you to have a container on the scale and then zero it to add your actual ingredients to insure accurate measurements. I use this often when adding hops or grains to my brew and need to know in exact ounces what is being added. The blue light up display is great for when it is dim in the room. The display is big and clear and easy to read. The pullout display is great for when you have large bowls on the scale. My only complaint/suggestion would be to have the scale read in decimals for all measurements. It shows "2 1/2 Oz." or "2 3/4 Oz." instead of 2.5 Oz. or 2.75 Oz. Other than that, this is a great scale. Buy it!

Alas, I use this scale primarily for weighing coffee beans for my espresso machine. I can place 17 grams in a small bowl, then pick up the bowl to remove some beans (16 grams is my goal), and when I place the bowl back on the scale again, it might display 18 or 19 grams!! If I pick up the bowl and replace it on the scale a few times, the weight can vary anywhere from 15 to 19 grams, not very helpful for my purposes. Really a shame, as I love everything else about it, but I need a greater level of accuracy, which this simply does not deliver.
101.) Consistent readings but deceptive power save
Reviewed by: Valentine Michael Smith Mars
Rating:
I got this to replace a Soehnle scale that had some sort of manufacturing defect, but there are two things I simply liked about the design of this scale. (1) Although it has a power save mode, it does not power off and erase the display only after a few minutes. It will blank the display, but the last reading can be restored by pressing one of the keys. (2) The button to switch between metric and English units is on the front panel, not the bottom of the unit.
11/23/2009 update: My previous comments were from around 1/19/2009, when I first bought this. That power save mode doesn't actually work all the time. Sometimes it will go blank with a weight on it but after being woken up will reset to 0 instead of the original weight.
4/17/2010 update: That power save mode can be annoying. Today I filled a container partially then left it for a couple minutes to get something else. When I came back to resume filling the container, the display was still turned on. As I continued filling, I watched the display tick up as it normally would, and then all of a sudden it went blank. When I turned it back on, it was back to 0. This makes no sense since the device should have been able to detect that I was actively using it.
On the bright side, the readings on this thing are still consistent after a year. I can see they're the same every time I put the same container on, and after filling the container if I remove the container and put it back the reading will go right back to 0 and then back to the previous weight. The Soehnle scale I used to have would become skewed by a few grams when items were removed from it and put back.

Can't believe that others rave about this scale so much. Firstly, don't try to weigh under 15 grams/about 1/2 ounce--it's just not accurate. Secondly, after it "times out" you are supposed to be able to recall the previous weight and continue--it's never worked it just re-set and you had to start all over again. Thirdly, the metal weighing plate has seriously discolored and looks like rusting (although it isn't) and nothing will get it clean and shiny again. Fourthly, I agree with other reviewers that fractional pounds should be in decimals--not fractions. And finally, after less than a year (when you could get it to turn on at all), it just started giving gibberish on the display--sometimes words, sometimes single letters, sometimes nothing. Batteries were exchanged to no avail. It's now useless. For something costing as much as it does, it should be better quality!
103.) Doesn't display 00.00 lbs
Reviewed by: Goosecat Vancouver, WA
Rating:
The quality and pullout feature are nice but a HUGE negative is that it can't display pounds or ounces in decimals. Every piece of meat/produce you buy at the store is labeled with decimals so like many people, I've gotten used to knowing how many pounds of a certain food I want to eat like 0.7lbs of steak or 0.3lbs of stir fry meat or 0.2lbs of deli meat. But when you get home, you can't weigh it the same way with this scale. You end up with a reading of something incomprehensible like 3 5/8 ounces. Huh?
Another example is let's say you buy 1.2lbs of meat and want to divide it into thirds at home. I cut up the meat and plop it on the scale to measure 0.4lbs but I can't. So either I have to get out my calculator to multiply 0.4*16 or I have to remeasure the entire meat in grams then divide by 3. What a pain.
The fractional ounce system is horribly inefficient so the more we can move away from that the better. This scale doesn't promote the advancement of our society.
UPDATE: I have since replaced the Oxo with the Eatsmart Precision Pro Scale which does display pounds or ounces in decimals. The Oxo has better construction quality but the Eatsmart is more usable in my opinion.

Replacing the batteries did not help. I am very disappointed, since the OXO cost quite a bit more than the Escali and I'd come to rely on OXO as having high quality products.
One thing I did not like about the OXO before it died was that it would time out faster than I could add things to a casserole dish before baking. So I'd have to turn it back on and re-tare as I added things. Not a huge deal, but less convenient than using the Escali.
The OXO decided to break just before I needed it to weigh my portions at a BBQ. Fortunately I had a Polder spring-loaded scale I could use as a backup. Less accurate, but at least I had some kind of estimate to track.
I ordered an Escali to replace the OXO.

I bought this scale - twice. They both had the same problem. When I was weighing something out gradually, like vegetables that I slice up bit by bit, the display would turn off after a while. It shouldn't do that, because there were only a few seconds delay between putting things on the scale.
But worse, I would press a key to try to get the weight back, and the scale would come back with a weight of 0! Rather than saving the weight as it's supposed to. It didn't matter which key I pressed, the same thing would happen.
Were the batteries low? It should give me a message about low batteries. I didn't try it with my own new batteries, rather than the ones that came with it.

This scale is very thin, the pull-out display works great, and it it easy to store.
Big Deal.
I mean, this scale is so horrible that I could not BELIEVE that everyone that reviewed this never had a problem with this scale.
I got out beads and tried to weigh one gram of beads. I weighed the same exact beads literally over and over about 60 times and only three times did I get the same exact weight. And that was only when the weight got up into the 10 gm range. The rest of the time the weight was wildly erratic.
1 gram of beads went from three small seed beads to 230 beads. It was almost inconceivable that a scale of this large price range could be so horrible to use. I have never been so disappointed in a purchase before based upon such positive reviews.
If I could give this NO STARS I would.
I am returning this piece of junk and still upset that it is so defective. I don't trust another scale again from this company after this.
The Tare function is erratic as well- one minute it zeros out and then the next minute it is in the negative and then it suddenly goes into the positive- all without being touched, knocked or altered in any way.
There has to be another scale out there for this price range that will actually be accurate and weigh things. I have visions of crying women weighing in at Weight Watchers not able to figure out how they could gain weight when they carefully weighed EVERYTHING they ate.
*shakes head*
I am really unhappy with this whole thing.
