Reviews of LifeSource UC-321 Precision Personal Health Scale

1.) Perfect for our needs
Reviewed by: Dolan Halbrook Portland, OR
Rating:
After going through two ~$50 digital scales that gave wildly different readings from one weighing to the next, we got fed up and decided to try the LifeSource. I'm very glad we did. This scale is both consistent and accurate. Consistent in that you can step on it ten times and you'll get the same reading every time. Accurate in that we compared our weight on it to the calibrated scale at our pediatrician and got exactly the same weight.

Knowing weight down to the tenth of a pound is nice, if a bit overkill for most people's needs. However, there is one area where this is really useful (and we've used it a lot for this purpose): if you are new parents and want to track the weight of your infant, this scale allows you to do that easily. We've been tracking our son's weight from birth to almost six months (next Wed) this way.

The trick to using this feature is to tap the "on" switch, and step on the scale before it registers a weight. Then one parent stands on the scale and is handed the infant. The scale will only measure the infant's weight; the parent's weight will be taken as part of the baseline. Once you try it it's an extremely simple method, and every time we've done it and then had a follow up exam at the pediatrician, the results have been spot on as mentioned before. Keep in mind that this scale is a whole lot cheaper than a dedicated infant scale, and more versatile. The only real downside is that a very squirmy kid (as ours is nowadays) will take a little longer to get an accurate reading than a calm one, but nothing is perfect.

It's a lot to spend for a scale, but, assuming it lasts a while (it seems well built and I expect it not to die any time soon), it's worth having something that just works as you expect it to. New parents: this is one purchase you might not get at a baby shower, but is well worth it for piece of mind. Plus, it looks pretty slick ;)

2.) An excellent scale

This scale is the real deal. I am very happy with mine. I've compared it twice to the reading on an expensive commercial digital scale in my doctor's office and got the same reading to 0.1 lb. The stainless steel finish would seem to fit in most any decor. The only small negative is that the reading can swing a tenth or two, but that goes away once you learn how to properly use the scale without shifting your body weight.

3.) Excellent Scale!

We have been very happy with this scale. It is accurate to .1 pound, which can be very important when you're trying to lose weight (seeing even a little bit of a drop can be excellent motivation!) You can step on it several times in a row and get the same number each time. We have been through many scales in the past, including some of the nicer digital scales from Taylor and Weight Watchers and the LifeSource scale has been far superior. It is very easy to use. There are other bells and whistles that we have not used - we use it as just the standard "turn it on, step on and get a number" type of scale.

It is well worth the price and is the most accurate, easy-to-use scale that I have ever owned.

5.) Excellent precision

I don't have a reference weight to judge its accuracy, but its precision is phenomenal. Most scales claim a resolution (say 0.2 lb), but they can't repeat it on multiple weighings. Our Health-o-meter Walmart special had a resolution 0.2 lb, but varied by ±1.4 lb over 10 measurements. This scale was within ±0.05 lb over 10 weighings. Since repeatability is most important to me, this was excellent.

We'd been reading reviews and looking for scales on Amazon for years when we saw this one. We were hesitant to buy them since it seemed the other scales had a lot of problems with accuracy and consistency. Generally scales are not precise to a tenth of a pound as this one is, either.

This scale is consistent, accurate and precise. It accurately measures my basal body weight to within a tenth of a pound. After I've had a big meal or if I have clothes on, it measures the additional amount. It matters if you shift around on the scale, so you need to stand still. Also, the instructions are clear in that the scale should be on a flat, level surface.

It is very simple to weigh our little Yorkie. It has a feature that allows you to set a reference weight (your weight) to zero and then you pick up the dog (or whatever) to see exactly how much it weighs. It came out exactly the same as the vet's scale.

We'd considered getting the compact version of this, but this one is really not that big. Very light and thin. We are quite happy with it. We need accurate weights so it was worth the extra money to get a scale that consistently tells the truth. What is the point of a scale that is off by several pounds each time you use it, even if it is cheap?

Am incredibly pleased and satisfied with this diet scale. It is consistent with doctor/medical scale. It has solid, weighty construction, which helps keep it from being bumped/jolted by errant feet, etc. It provides one, unchanging weight (vs less expensive scales can provide range of weights). Very happy with this purchase.

I have found the scale to be very accurate. My weight reads exactly the same down to the 1/10th of a pound when I weigh myself multiple times over the course of a couple of hours. This scale is made in Japan and not China, which was a pleasant surprise. My experience with items from Japan have been fantastic. They seem to care more about quality and craftsmanship. Who would have ever thought that the skinniest people in the world make some of the best scales?

18.) Extremely Good Product
Reviewed by: Jack W. Cannon Lawrenceburg, TN USA

An exceptionally good scale - probably the best. The repeatability is fantastic - it never varies. It is difficult to imagine a better scale unless you want to spend several hundred dollars for the equivalent of the one in your doctor's office that won't fit in your bathroom anyway. The tenth pound accuracy is great but you do have to learn to stand very still to stabilize it to that accuracy. Don't forget that your Health-O-Meter scale varies about 2 pounds as you stand on it and can vary as much as 5 pounds the next time you step on it.

I am not in a multi-user environment but can understand how multiple users would be discouraged with having to pick it up and change the controls. However the multi-user controls only apply for those users who are tracking BMI or target weight instead of current weight. If current weight is the only concern then multiple users do not create a problem with the controls. If I were in a multi-user environment and BMI was the primary concern then I would just buy two of these scales and not change the controls. Even so it makes more sense to me to store target weight and BMI in my head instead of the bathroom scale.

For those users complaining about a defective product, just send it back. It comes with a 3-year warranty instead of a 30-day warranty like every thing else you purchase.

I share the same sentimates as the other opinions here that you've already read ..this scale is absolutley TOPS. Any other scale that I have used delivers a slightly different reading each time that you step on it.

Not the case with this scale! This scale will not only read in 1/10 pound increments, it will consistantly give you repeated readings within 1/10 of a pound each time that you step on it.

I'm currently on a weight reduction program and weigh myself twice a day. I can't believe the over-all consistancy of this scale.

I love this scale and would buy it again if for some reason I needed to.

Admittedly my wife and I just use it for weighting ourselves and do not use any of its other recording features.
s
This scale is amazingly and consistanly accurate ..did you know that under wear weigh in at about 1/10 to 2/10 of a pound?

I also really love Amazon's great product review process ..both Amazon's product review process and totally lowest pricing keep me returning as an Amazon customer.

HINT: if you want to preserve the acuracy of this scale ..or any other bathroom scale ..'DO NOT' store your scale in a sometimes steamy bathroom.

Purchased this scale because of the high precision claims and it lives up to the claim. Scale displays in tenth pound increments and if my weight is near the next tenth it will flip if I remove my glasses. My old scale displayed at half pound increments and the reading would not repeat with getting on and of the scale.

One complaint, the display is hard to see. There is a lot of reflection on the lens covering the Liquid Crystal display, an LED would be easier to see.

22.) Accurately measures weight
Reviewed by: R. Miller San Francsico, CA United States

This device accurately measures my weight. You'd think that was what every scale does, but not so. Those scales at Bed, Bath, and Beyond (I tried three different models!) were ridiculously inaccurate.

This scale doesn't tell read your horoscope or determine your white blood cell count--it just does well what I want it to do: Tell me how much I weigh.

The fact that it uses easily obtained and installed AA batteries is a bonus.

My only suggested improvement would be an LED glowing display, but it's not really a bother. I'm just glad to have found a decent scale. Who'd have thought it would be so hard to find?

If you want an inaccurate scale with bells and whistles, your options are nearly limitless. If you want a quality scale that will tell you the truth every time, buy this one.

I've had this scale for about a month and overall, this scale works very well. I've tested its accuracy by stepping on it, getting my weight, then stepping on it again while holding objects of various weights from 5 ounces to 10 pounds. On every measure, it correctly and consistently gave the additional weights accurately to 0.1 lbs. Also I appreciate the function that allows you to weigh your pets/baby. (For some reason though, it sometimes takes several tries to initiate this function.) The scale feels hefty, but has a slim, low profile, stainless steel form factor. The one disappointment is that this scale is made in China. If possible, I prefer to purchase US made products so had I known this, I probably wouldn't have purchased this scale. I wish Amazon would give this information (where it was manufactured) on all products they sell.

27.) Good SINGLE USER functionality.
Reviewed by: Lucy Modesto, CA

Good quality scale. Seems accurate so far. I'm disappointed that the mult-user functionality is poor. My husband and I were hoping that we could both benefit from the scale. Getting to the controls and setting a target weight and utilizing the memory functions requires handling the scale, picking it up and flipping the switch on the reverse side. This would not be a big negative for a single user, but with more than one user, it is. If I set my target or use the memory function, everything works well. The scale weighs me and notes the differences - reminds me of my last weight, etc.. But if my husband wants to use the scale and set his, then mine must be overridden and the scale must be picked up, turned over, etc.. If I get back on, it has his target weight, etc.. Not good.

A very nice positive to the scale is that some feet are added in the packaging that allows me to set this on the carpet. In my thicker bedroom carpet, no dice. In my living room with finer carpet, it works great. For hard, flat surfaces, the feet need not be applied. Even on the carpet the weights are consistent within 1/5th of a pound. All in all, a scale of high quality.. If you need a scale that weighs accurately and is precision-built, this might be a good choice.

The negatives are partly my fault for concluding that a scale that costs this much and has 31 memory functions does not allow for concurrent multiple users.. because nowhere does it state that it's multi-user friendly.. Nevertheless, the picking up and turning over of the scale to change user functions is a negative for any user environment. It seems to be that they might have expanded multi-user functions with buttons like some scales in the Tanita line, or added some to the side... but their design may not allow for that. I don't know yet if I will send it back.

3 stars for multi-user families, 4 stars in a single user environment.

Reviewed by: Desktop Jinx

After reading reviews for many bathroom scales on Amazon, I stepped up to this one based on multiple reviews praising its accuracy.

I'm glad it works for other folks, but it NEVER gave me consistent weights, not once. I don't mean day-to-day, I mean minute-to-minute. I don't mean a couple tenths or even a pound variance, I mean up to eight pound swings in three successive weighings.

Yes, with fresh batteries. Yes, on a hard level surface -- hardwood floor, 18-inch bathroom tile, polished concrete. Indoors, outdoors, warm, cold, humid, dry, morning, noon, night, even in different cities -- I tried everything to try to make use of this expensive product, and it NEVER delivered.

On a GOOD day, it'd only vary by two pounds on successive measurements. Sure, for someone who weighs about 200 lbs, that's only 1%, but it's also the amount you'd safely lose in a week on a weight loss program. When your potential progress (or lack thereof) is swallowed by the variance of the measuring device, the device is not useful.

This wiggly plastic thing with feet that fall off every time you pick it up to move it is a sham. Digital pressure sensors? Bah! Useless if they're attached to flimsy junk.

30.) May be accurate but unable to connect
Reviewed by: Rem Mercer Island, WA

I primarily purchased this scale because it is one of the two featured to be able to connect with Microsoft Health Vault and upload your weight information. So far I have been unable to connect and I would say that I am on the tech savvy side of things.

First, you need a separate cable to connect. Not every site seems to sell this cable so you have to hunt around a bit to find it. This cost an extra $30 or so with shipping.

Second the drivers are hard to find. If you go to Microsoft Health Vault you can find them via the listing of devices that (are supposed) to work with Microsoft Health Vault (http://www.healthvault.com/device/ANDMedical-Weightscales.html?type=device). But, there were no Windows 64 device drivers available.

So, I installed Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit, installed the drivers seemingly successfully but the device is still not recognized and device manager show an explanation point and the status is that the device will not start. At this point I am giving up on connectivity and uploading.

Also, the documentation in regards to connecting is nonexistent (one line in the user manual says it is possible). The weight diary software that is you can only findable online (http://www.aandd.jp/products/software/weightdiary.html) appears to be circa 1990 and also has terrible documentation.

I am planning on returning and trying the Tanita alternative. Too bad, I spent at least 4 hours over multiple weeks trying to make this work.

It broke in less than a year. Even when it was technically working, the weight varied from minute to minute. I was so disappointed. After having finally discarded an analog drugstore scale that I had for years, I bought this because of the great reviews. It has little plastic pieces as feet that do not stay put, it was flimsy and overpriced and then just gave out. I will go back to an old fashioned scale that works...

My friends got one of these five years ago, and it worked fine until recently, when it started displaying "E-0" (some kind of error), and the battery indicator said that the batteries are low. They've replaced the batteries a couple of times with known good batteries, and it didn't fix it. I was visiting them, and happened to have a brand new package of Duracells with me, so I tried them, and that didn't help either.

33.) It didn't work

It LOOKED like a good scale. It's the only one I saw that could read in tenths of pounds but it worked only intermittently right out of the box. I just sent it back. Amazon gave me no trouble returning it. Even if it had worked it is a bother to have to push a button to turn it on before getting on to weigh yourself. A scale like the one from Oregon Scientific turns on automatically when you get on it. I have one of those and it worked for many years but it reads in two tenth increments and is now having problems.

34.) UNRELIABLE
